Family estates, known by name

Terra Alma begins with relationships: wines tasted where they were made, from growers whose land and decisions can be traced in every bottle.

The people behind Valados de Melgaço

Vinho Verde · Monção e Melgaço

Valados de Melgaço

Founded in 2015 by Artur Meleiro, Valados de Melgaço continues generations of knowledge at Quinta de Golães, a working farm on the slopes above the River Minho. Vineyards between 100 and 200 metres on granite soils in Monção e Melgaço, Portugal's most prestigious Alvarinho appellation.

Artur farms with minimum intervention. His philosophy: Alvarinho at this altitude and on this soil speaks for itself. His role is simply not to get in the way. The wines are mineral-driven rather than tropical, with salinity, citrus pith, and stony precision. Decanter Silver. Multiple international gold medals.

Think of it as Portugal's answer to Condrieu, but almost nobody in California has discovered it yet. That's the opportunity.

Old vines at Oboé Wines in the Douro

Douro · Cima Corgo

Oboé Wines

Family business at Quinta do Cabeço on the left bank of the Douro, Cima Corgo, Tabuaço. Halfway up a hillside of traditional narrow terraces with extraordinary south-facing exposure. The soils are schist, fractured dark rock that forces vine roots 15–20 meters deep in search of moisture.

That extreme environment produces small, concentrated berries with thick skins and exceptional phenolic complexity. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz are the Douro's great native varieties in one of the valley's most respected Cima Corgo addresses.

Fagote Reserva: 92 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. Oboé Superior: 93 points, Andreas Larsson MW, the world's best sommelier. These scores come from the land, not marketing.

The Douro River near Aneto Wines

Douro · Lamego & Penajóia

Aneto Wines

Founded in 2001 by a family with what they describe as an enormous passion for the Douro. Two separate vineyards, two completely different terroirs a rare dual-address approach in a valley where most producers work with one site.

White vineyards: Quinta do Estremadouro, Penajóia granite and schist at altitude, transitional Atlantic-Mediterranean climate. Native white varieties (Sercial, Verdelho, Viosinho, Gouveio) fermented cool and aged on lees for aromatic freshness and texture.

Red vineyards: Castedo do Douro and Alvações do Corgo, pure schist, more extreme conditions. A pioneering 2-hectare parcel at Barrô at 450 meters grows Pinot Noir that defies expectation. The restaurant Aneto & Table in Peso da Régua completes the picture.

Quinta do Sobral in Santar

Dão · Santar

Quinta do Sobral de Santar

Begun with sacrifice in 1995 by Nelson Simões. He arrived in Santar with a vision and very little else, annexed land year by year, reconstructed abandoned vineyards, and by 2000 had built his winery inside a granite hillside using tunnels and chambers excavated from rock. The cellars are among the Dão's most dramatic.

Today winemaker Patrícia Santos oversees 15 hectares of vines on the granite plateau at 388 metres. The range spans approachable estate wines through to rare single-varietal expressions of Encruzado and Malvasia Fina in forms nearly impossible to find outside Portugal.

The estate's most extraordinary chapter began when granddaughter Maria discovered her grandfather's 50-year-old vineyard register after his death, within it, varieties that had since vanished from the Dão. That discovery became the Coleção Mimi do Avô.

Santar Vila Jardim manor and gardens

Dão · Santar

Santar Vila Jardim

The vision of winemaker Pedro de Vasconcellos e Souza: unite several aristocratic families of the ancient village of Santar around a concept as unusual as it is beautiful. Breaking down walls between neighboring properties. Connecting spaces that had been separate for centuries. Making bridges between generations.

The wines are grown in plots formerly occupied by orchards and kitchen gardens land embedded within the living village, surrounded by biodiversity, dry-stone fences and century-old hedgerows. This integration of vineyard into village (rather than monoculture fields) gives the wines a distinctly different character: more aromatic, more textural, more alive.

The ex-libris is the 17th-century manor, Casa dos Condes de Santar e Magalhães. All wines: Integrated Protection certified, Vegan certified.

The story

Born from a love of authentic Portugal

We are not a catalogue. We are a translation—between winemakers who pour their lives into the land, and the tables where their wines will be remembered.

Terra Alma began as Ana’s personal quest through Portuguese wine beyond the familiar route: cellars that do not advertise, family tables, and vineyards shaped by schist, granite, and Atlantic wind.

Every producer in this collection was visited in person. Every wine was tasted at its source. The result is a direct passage between Portuguese growers and curious American tables.
